THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO

My English teacher Maria, asked me to read a book of Intermediate level to practise my reading. My first book choosen was: The Count of Monte Cristo.

The plot is about a happy young seaman called Edmon Dantes, who loves his father and his lover Mercedes, but his enemies hate his success.

His great enemy was Danglars, who was with him in the ship Pharaoh. One day, Danglars wrote a letter to Calderouse, an old friend of Edmond's father, and the told the government that Edmond was helping Napoleon, when all was false.

Later, a judge called Villefort ordered prison to Edmond, and on the day of Edmond's and Mercedes wedding, he was taken to prison in the Chateau d'If, where late he met Faria.

Faria was an old prisoner and he wanted to leave this prison. He made a hole and he connected his room to the room of Edmond. Faria told Edmond a lot of things, but the most important thing was about a treasure of Spada's family in a island called Monte Cristo.

Some days later, Faria died and Edmond was thinking the way to leave the prison. Finally, he opened the bag where the body of Faria was and he took and carried it along the underground path to his own room. He returned to Faria's room and he got inside the bag.

Later and at night, this bag was thrown into the sea with a stone tied by two soldiers of the Chateau d'If, but Edmond cut the stone and got free with the knife of Faria.

During some hours, he was swimming and he was too weak, but he was recued by a ship called Young Amelia.

The Young Amelia carried goods and the captain did his business. One day, they went to Monte Cristo island and they were working during the night. Next morning, while the men rested, Edmond walked away and climbed high. He followed the instructions of Faria and he found the door of the treasure, but he decided to go back to the men.

Edmon was jumping from rock to rock and he invented a false fall. They all ran to him, but he didn't want help, therefore, he was alone in the island because the men continued the journey.

Edmond returned to the treasure and he saw a chest with three smaller boxes inside. In these boxes there were gold coins, bars of gold and gold rings.

After six days, the Young Amelia returned to Monte Cristo and the captain wanted Edmond to help them, because he was a good sailor and a government ship came after them due to their business. Edmont went on board and the ship sailed to Livorno.

In Livorno, Edmond sold some rings and he won money. With this money he bought a small boat and he returned to Monte Cristo island. There, he carried the treasure on board. After that, he sailed into Marseilles, his house.

In the papers of the boat said 'This boat is owned by the Count of Monte Cristo', therefore, he didn't have any problem in the entry of the Marseilles port.

When he arrived, he returned to the house of his father. There were his father and Mercedes. The old eyes of his father looked up at him, and he died. Finally, Mercedes and Edmond went with his boat far away in the Mediterranean sea.

The writer of The Count of Monte Cristo was Alexandre Dumas, and he was born in France in 1802. In this year, Napoleon became ruler of France, but later, his enemies sent him away from France and they brought the Bourbon Kings back to rule France. In 1815, the year when The Count of Monte Cristo begins, Napoleon returned, and the king left France. Napoleon became the ruler of France again up to he lost a great fight at Waterloo, and he died in 1821.

Finally and in my opinion, The Count of Monte Cristo is an exciting adventure story and I like it. I recommend this book because you can see how a young and innocent person is a prisoner and later he returns home very rich.
